Q&A: Fever and Pregnancy
Find out what to do if you develop a fever during your second trimester.
Priscilla Gragg
Q. What happens if I develop a fever during my 2nd trimester?
A. With a charged-up metabolism and hormone changes, your body's going to naturally run hotter than usual. However, if your fever rises above 100 degrees, you'll be uncomfortable enough to want to do something about it. If you have cold or flu symptoms, your fever is probably related to the pesky virus that's making you sniff and cough. Fevers are much less likely to cause fetal damage in the 2nd trimester than in the 1st trimester, but you should still try to lower it with acetaminophen (the ingredient in Tylenol), which is safe at any stage of pregnancy. Tepid baths and cool air might help too. However, if you have a fever over 101 degrees with no cold or flu symptoms, make an appointment to see your provider. The fever could signal an infection that needs prompt medical attention.
